Today's verse

بِسْمِ اللّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيْم

Surah 100

Al-'Adiyaat

Those that run

ﺳﻮﺭﺓ ﺍﻟﻌَﺎﺩﯾَﺎﺕ
Verse  3

Arabic:

ﻓَﺎﻟْﻤُﻐِﻴﺮَﺍﺕِﺻُﺒْﺤًﺎ

Transliteration:

Fal mugiiraati 'subhan.

Meaning:

3. And scouring to the raid at dawn.

Tafsir

﴿ﻓَﺎﻟْﻤُﻐِﻴﺮَﺕِ ﺻُﺒْﺤﺎً ﴾

(And scouring to the raid at dawn.)

Meaning, the raid that is carried out in the early morning time. This is just as the Messenger of Allah used to perform raids in the early morning. He would wait to see if he heard the Adhan (call to
prayer) from the people. If he heard it he would leave them alone, and if he didn't hear it he would attack.

Surah 100

Al-'Adiyaat

ﺳﻮﺭﺓ ﺍﻟﻌَﺎﺩﯾَﺎﺕ
Verse  2

Arabic:

ﻓَﺎﻟْﻤُﻮﺭِﻳَﺎﺕِ ﻗَﺪْﺣًﺎ

Transliteration:

Fal muuriyaati qadhan

(The 'h' in 'qadhan' is for ْﺤًﺎ and not ﻫ, so let's pronounce it as if we want to breath out air from our mouth).

Meaning:

2. Striking sparks of fire (by their hooves).

Tafsir

The expression  (ﻓَﺎﻟْﻤُﻮﺭِﻳَﺎﺕِﻗَﺪْﺣًﺎ) "Striking sparks of fire" has been interpreted in various ways.

Some say it means the sparks coming out of the hooves when they strike the rocky surface of earth.
Another view is that it means the raging fire of battle.

Another interpretation is war tactics.

Still another opinion is that it refers to lightning fire by the riders after returning to their camps or by the pilgrims after their arriving in Muzdalifah after sunset.

I prefer the view that it refers to the horses galloping in the cause of Allah.

Abu Bakr Bazzar quoted a Hadith that the Prophet (SAW) once despatched a calvary. A full month passed but no news came to the Prophet (SAW), then this revelation came to inform the Prophet that the galloping horse riders attacked the enemy in the morning and routed them.

Today's verse

بِسْمِ اللّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيْم

Surah 100

Al-'Adiyaat

Those that run

ﺳﻮﺭﺓ ﺍﻟﻌَﺎﺩﯾَﺎﺕ
Verse  1

Arabic:

ﻭَﺍﻟْﻌَﺎﺩِﻳَﺎﺕِﺿَﺒْﺤًﺎ

Transliteration:

Wal 'aadiyaati dobhaa.

(The 'h' in 'dobhan' is for ْﺤًﺎ and not ﻫ, so let's pronounce it as if we want to breath out air from our mouth).

Meaning:

1. By the (steeds) that run, with panting.

Tafsir

Allah takes the oath of the horses galloping and pointing in the Cause of Allah, striking sparks of fire by their hooves and reaching the enemy at the dawn.

The Prophet used to arrive  at an enemy settlement and wait until just before dawn. If he heard the adhan, he would stop, if not, he would attack. Abdullah and 'Ali took the word 'Adiyaat to mean camels.

Once Abdullah bin 'Abbas was sitting in the Hateem when a man came and asked the meaning of 'Adiyaat. He said that the word means the horses of the warriors that attack the enemy. Then their riders come back to their camps and cook their meals. The man came to 'Ali and asked him the same question. He asked him in return if he had asked the question from somebody else. The man told him that he had asked Abdullah bin Abbas and informed him if his answer. Ali sent for Abdullah bin Abbas. When he came, Ali told him, "You don't know, but you pass judgement. By Allah, the first battle fought in Islam was the battle of Badr and we had only two horses in it, one belonged to Zubair and the other to Miqdad. How can they be 'Adiyaat dobhaa'. This verse refers to those who go to Arafat from Mina and from there to Muzdalifah where they built fires for cooking." Abdullah said that after this, he withdrew his view and adopted the opinion of Ali.

As against 'Ali, Mujahid, Iktimah, Ata , Qatadah, Dahhak and Aufi agreed with Ibn Abbas and said the word meant horses. Ibn Jarir also preferred this view. Ibn Abbas and 'At a said the word 'Dabh' is not used for any animal other than horses and dogs.

NOTE: It is important to clarify that the Islamic community under the Prophet was threatened with extinction from threats from different unbelieving territories and their leaders. They had to constantly fight to retain their religion and independence. Don't be deceived by the framing of Islam as violent by the unbelievers. There was no Prophet who was in charge of government who didn't fight. Only those Prophet who were individuals and did not serve as rulers for their people where saved from having to fight to protect their people, and Allah knows best.

Today's verse

بِسْمِ اللّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيْم

Surah 101.

Al-Qari'a,

The Striking Hour

ﺳﻮﺭﺓ َ ﺍﻟْﻘَﺎﺭِﻋَﺔُ

Verse  11

Arabic:

ﻧَﺎﺭٌﺣَﺎﻣِﻴَﺔٌ

Transliteration:

Naarun aamiyah.

(pronounce the 'aa' beginning 'aamiyah' as though you want to breath out air)

Meaning:

11.(It is) a fiercely blazing Fire!

Tafsir

Then Allah says that it is a a Fire of extremely high heat with raging flames. The Prophet said, "Your fire (the fire we use in the world) is the seventieth (70th) part of that Fire." The Companions said, "Even it is enough to destroy one." The Prophet (SAW) said, "Yes, but that has sixty-nine more equal parts of heat." (Bukhari). Ahmad bin Hanbal reported the Prophet as saying: "This fire despite its being a seventieth part of Hell Fire has been twice extinguished in the ocean. Had it not been so, you could not have benefitted from it." Another hadith said: "This fire is the hundredth part of the Hell Fire." Another hadith said, "That fire is seventy times darker than even the smoke of this fire of yours." (Tabarani).

Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah reported the Prophet as saying, "The fire of hell was kept burning for one thousand years until it became red, then it was kept burning for one thousand years until it turned white. Then it kept burning for one thousand years until it turned black and extremely dark."

Ahmad bin Hanbal reported the Prophet as saying: "Among the inmates of hell, the one lightest punishment will be the one who will be made to put on a pair of sandals made of fire and with the heat of them his brain will be boiled.

Bukhari & Muslim reported that the Prophet said: "Hell complained to Allah, 'My one part is eating the other.' Then the All-Mighty permitted it to breath twice, once in summer and once in winter. The extreme cold weather which you experience is it's cold breath and the extreme heat in summer is from him.

Another hadith said, "At the time of intense heat, the Prophet instructed us to offer prayer, as the extreme heat is because of the brave of Hell.

Today's verse

بِسْمِ اللّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيْم

Surah 101.

Al-Qari'a,

The Striking Hour

ﺳﻮﺭﺓ َ ﺍﻟْﻘَﺎﺭِﻋَﺔُ

Verse  10

Arabic:

ﻭَﻣَﺎ ﺃَﺩْﺭَﺍﻙَ ﻣَﺎﻫِﻴَﻪ

Transliteration:

Wa maa adraaka maa hiyah

Meaning:

10. And what will make you know what it is?

Tafsir

Ash'ath bin Abdullah says that after the death of a believer, the angels take his soul to the souls of other believers and say, "Give solace to your brother. Till now he was in troubles." Now those noble souls ask him (the new soul), "How is so and so?". He replies, "He is dead. Did he not come to you?" They understand the fact and say, "He was taken to his abode Hawiyah".

Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Comment:

I'll like to point out something very important from the commentary.

Note what the angels told the believers when they brought the soul of another believer who just died to join them - " Give solace to your brother. Till now he was in troubles." -

Meaning that the believer who died and whose soul was taken to join the soul of the other believers who had died before him in Paradise did not live a life full of luxuries and all he wanted.

No, rather - till his death he was in troubles - perhaps he was looking for a child, perhaps his marriage had challenges, or he faced health problems, or he was financially handicapped, or he had leprosy and so was constantly taking drugs to suppress it so it doesn't embarrass him in public....the list is endless.

But he kept faith and worshipped Allah, and that's why he could still make paradise.

But imagine the friend who was taken to hell fire - he too would have faced challenges because no one comes to this life without his own problems, but he didn't keep faith and so became an inmate of Hawiyah.

My dear sisters, as women, we will face problems - with beauty (whether you're too ugly and unwanted or too beautiful and lusted after), with wealth (whether it's too small and living is tough, or too much and you become arrogant), with marriage and children (whether your husband is uncaring and you feel unloved or he even divorced you or marries someone else who is making your life unbearable, or your marriage is so perfect you feel those who have challenges are not as good as you) etc.

Allah's test can come with positive or negative challenges, let's keep faith in our Creator and His worship regardless of our lot in life so we won't be an inmate of Hawiyah.

May Allah save us from the punishment of the Fire, Amin.

ﺳﻮﺭﺓ َ ﺍﻟْﻘَﺎﺭِﻋَﺔُ

Verse  9

Arabic:

ﻓَﺄُﻣُّﻪُ ﻫَﺎﻭِﻳَﺔ

Transliteration:

Faum muhu haawiyah

Meaning:

9. His mother will be Hawiyah

Tafsir

Hawiyah is one of the names of the Hell.

ﺍﺷْﺘَﻜَﺖِ ﺍﻟﻨَّﺎﺭُ ﺇِﻟَﻰ ﺭَﺑِّﻬَﺎ ﻓَﻘَﺎﻟَﺖْ : ﻳَﺎ ﺭَﺏِّ ﺃَﻛَﻞَ ﺑَﻌْﻀِﻲ ﺑَﻌْﻀًﺎ، ﻓَﺄَﺫِﻥَ ﻟَﻬَﺎ ﺑِﻨَﻔَﺴَﻴْﻦِ : ﻧَﻔَﺲٍ ﻓِﻲ ﺍﻟﺸِّﺘَﺎﺀِ، ﻭَﻧَﻔَﺲٍ ﻓِﻲ ﺍﻟﺼَّﻴْﻒِ، ﻓَﺄَﺷَﺪُّ ﻣَﺎ
ﺗَﺠِﺪُﻭﻥَ ﻓِﻲ ﺍﻟﺸِّﺘَﺎﺀِ ﻣِﻦْ ﺑَﺮْﺩِﻫَﺎ، ﻭَﺃَﺷَﺪُّ ﻣَﺎ ﺗَﺠِﺪُﻭﻥَ ﻓِﻲ ﺍﻟﺼَّﻴْﻒِ ﻣِﻦْ ﺣَﺮِّﻫَﺎ‏»
(The Hellfire complained to its Lord and said, "O Lord! Some parts of me devour other parts of me.'' So He (Allah) permitted it to take two breaths: one breath in the winter and
one breath in the summer. Thus, the most severe cold that you experience in the winter is from its cold, and the most severe heat that you experience in the summer is from its
heat. )

In the Two Sahihs it is recorded that he said,
‏«ﺇِﺫَﺍ ﺍﺷْﺘَﺪَّ ﺍﻟْﺤَﺮُّ ﻓَﺄَﺑْﺮِﺩُﻭﺍ ﻋَﻦِ ﺍﻟﺼَّﻠَﺎﺓِ، ﻓَﺈِﻥَّ
ﺷِﺪَّﺓَ ﺍﻟْﺤَﺮِّ ﻣِﻦْ ﻓَﻴْﺢِ ﺟَﻬَﻨَّﻢ‏»
(When the heat becomes intense pray the prayer when it cools down, for indeed the intense heat is from the breath of Hell.)

7. He will live a pleasant life.

Tafsir

On that Day all good deed and evil deeds will become clear. One whose good deeds will overweight his evil acts will live a happy and pleasant life in Paradise. And one whose sins outweigh more heavily in the scales will be thrown headfirst into Hell.

Surah 101.

ﺳﻮﺭﺓ َ ﺍﻟْﻘَﺎﺭِﻋَﺔُ

Verse 5

Arabic:

ﻭَﺗَﻜُﻮﻥُ ﺍﻟْﺠِﺒَﺎﻝُ ﻛَﺎﻟْﻌِﻬْﻦِ ﺍﻟْﻤَﻨْﻔُﻮﺵ

Transliteration:

Watakuunul jibaalu kal 'iihnil manfuush

Meaning:

5. And the mountains will be like wool, carded.

Tafsir:

(And the mountains will be like wool, carded.) meaning, they will become like carded wool that has began to wear out (fade away) and be torn apart. Mujahid, `Ikrimah, Sa`id bin Jubayr, Al-Hasan, Qatadah, `Ata' Al-Khurasani, Ad-Dahhak and As-Suddi have all said,
﴿ﻛَﺎﻟْﻌِﻬْﻦِ﴾
(like wool (`Ihn). ) "Woolen.'' Then Allah informs about the results received by those who performed the deeds, and the honor and disgrace they will experience based upon their deeds.

Verse 4

Arabic.

  ﻳَﻮْﻡَ ﻳَﻜُﻮﻥُ ﺍﻟﻨَّﺎﺱُ ﻛَﺎﻟْﻔَﺮَﺍﺵِ ﺍﻟْﻤَﺒْﺜُﻮﺙ

Transliteration:

Yaomo yakuunun naasu kalfaroosil mab thuus

Meaning:

4. It is a Day whereon mankind will be like moths scattered about

Tafsir - Verses 3 & 4

(It is a Day whereon mankind will be like moths scattered about.) meaning, in their scattering, their dividing, their coming and their going, all due to being bewildered at what is happening to them, they will be like scattered moths.

This is like Allah's statement,

﴿ﻛَﺄَﻧَّﻬُﻢْ ﺟَﺮَﺍﺩٌ ﻣُّﻨﺘَﺸِﺮٌ﴾

(As if they were locusts spread abroad.) (54:7)

And what will make you know what the striking hour is?

Al-Qari'ah (The Striking Hour) is one of the names of the Day of Resurrection, like Al-Haqqah (The Reality), At-Tammah (The Day of Recompense), As-Sakhkhah (The Day of the Second Blowing of Trumpet) and Al-Ghashiyah (The Overwhelming).

Suratul At-Takathur

[The Piling Up]

Verse 8

Arabic:

ﺛُﻢَّ ﻟَﺘُﺴْﺄَﻟُﻦَّ ﻳَﻮْﻣَﺌِﺬٍ ﻋَﻦِ ﺍﻟﻨَّﻌِﻴﻢ

Transliteration:

Thumma latusalunna yawmaidhin 'anin na'eem

Meaning:
8. Then on that Day you shall be asked about the
delights!

Tafsir [Continuation]

According to a hadith, when the companions heard verse 8, they said, "O Messenger of Allah, we are eating only the bread of barley and have only enough of that to half fill our bellies." Then came the revelation, "Do you not go out on your shoes, do you not drink cold water,? These are the bounties about which you will be asked."

Another hadith that enumerates the bounties, for which one will be accountable, includes such things as cold water, shady houses, sound sleep, honey, drink and bread. Ibn 'Abbas, in his commentary says that one will be asked about his health and about the faculties of hearing and seeing. The Qur'an itself said:

"Verily, the hearing, and the sight, and the heart, of each of those you will be questioned" Q17:36.

Bukhari reported a hadith which said: "There are two things about which the people are careless; health and leisure. Neither they thank for them, nor value them, nor use them according to the will of the All-Mighty.

Verse 7

Arabic:

ﺛُﻢَّ ﻟَﺘَﺮَﻭُﻧَّﻬَﺎ ﻋَﻴْﻦَ ﺍﻟْﻴَﻘِﻴﻦ

Transliteration:

Thumma latarawunnahaa 'aenal yaqeen.

Meaning:

7. And again, you shall see it with certainty of
sight!

Tafsir [ Continuation]

Umar narrated: Once we were sitting when the Prophet came. He seemed to have taken fresh bath. We said, "You are looking happy today, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet said, "Yes, I am." Then the people present started talking about affluence. The Prophet said, "Affluence is not a bad thing for one who has fear of Allah in his heart. Remember, for a pious man good health is even better than affluence, and cheerfulness is a bounty from Allah." (Al-Musnad, Imam Ahmad)

Chapter 102

Suratul At-Takathur

[The Piling Up]

Verse 5

Arabic:

ﻛَﻠَّﺎ ﻟَﻮْ ﺗَﻌْﻠَﻤُﻮﻥَ ﻋِﻠْﻢَ ﺍﻟْﻴَﻘِﻴﻦ

Transliteration:

Kalla law ta'lamuuna 'ilmal yaqeen.

Meaning:

5. Nay! If you knew with a sure knowledge.

Tafsir [Continuation]

Ibn Abi Hatim reported: 'Umar bin Abdul-Aziz recited these verses and said, "The word 'Ziyarah' as used in the verse denotes visit and every visitor returns home." Abu Muhammad said, "The visitor, after goes to his abode, i.e., either to Hell or to Paradise."

Then Allah, in a warning tone, says twice: "Nay, You shall come to know!" A view is that the first verse (3) addresses the believers while the other (4) addresses the disbelievers. Then Allah says that if you were able to realise, you would not have indulged in mutual rivalry and would not have forgotten the Day of Judgement. On they Day you will be called to account for all the bounties given to you.

بِسْمِ اللّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيْم

ﺳﻮﺭﺓ َ ﺍﻟﺘﻜﺎﺛﺮ

Verse 4

Arabic:

ﺛُﻢَّ ﻛَﻠَّﺎ ﺳَﻮْﻑَ ﺗَﻌْﻠَﻤُﻮﻥ

Transliteration:

Thumma kalla sawfa ta'lamuun

Meaning:

3. Nay Again! You shall come to know!

Tafsir [Continuation]

Dahhak, seeing a dirham (a silver coin) with a man asked him, "Whose is this?" He said, "It is mine." Then Dahhak said, "It will be yours if you spend it in the way of Allah or give it in charity as a token of gratitude." Ahnaf, after narrating the story recited the couplet:

"You are for money as long as you keep it with you; when you spend it, it becomes yours."

Ibn Buraidah said that the Ansar tribes of Banu Harithah and Banu Harith began competing with each other about their brave men. In this competition, each tribe boasted about its brave and wealthy members. When they ran out of names, they went to the graveyard and continued boasting, pointing to the graves of their heroes. This led to the revelation of verses 1&2. Through these verses Allah reproaches them for their mutual rivalry which took them as far as the graveyard, arguing with each other about their heroes. They should rather have taken a lesson for themselves, remembering that death awaits us all.

بِسْمِ اللّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيْم

ﺳﻮﺭﺓ َ ﺍﻟﺘﻜﺎﺛﺮ

Suratul At-Takathur

[The Piling Up]

Verse 2

Arabic:

ﺣَﺘَّﻰٰ ﺯُﺭْﺗُﻢُ ﺍﻟْﻤَﻘَﺎﺑِﺮ

Transliteration:

Atta zurtumul maqaabir

Meaning:

2. Until you visit the graves.

Tafsir

Information: The tafsir of verses 1&2 are together while the tafsir of verses 3 to 8 are together.

So we will break the tafsir  for the whole chapter in bits and take them in a continuous chapter till the end of the surah,  إن شاء الله ‏

Tafsir

Allah said addressing His slaves that the love of the world and greed for its bounties have turned your attention from doing righteous deeds for the Hereafter. You remain oblivious of the Hereafter till your death comes and you reach your graves. The Prophet said explaining these verses "Your mutual rivalry for piling up of worldly things diverts you from obedience to Allah and you remain oblivious of the Hereafter until death approaches you" (Ibn Abi Hatim). Has an Al-Basri said that the greed for more children and more wealth has turned people away from remembering death.

Sūrat Al-'Asr - Chapter 103

Verse  3

Arabic

ﺇِﻟَّﺎ ﺍﻟَّﺬِﻳﻦَ ﺁﻣَﻨُﻮﺍ ﻭَﻋَﻤِﻠُﻮﺍ ﺍﻟﺼَّﺎﻟِﺤَﺎﺕِ ﻭَﺗَﻮَﺍﺻَﻮْﺍ ﺑِﺎﻟْﺤَﻖِّ ﻭَﺗَﻮَﺍﺻَﻮْﺍ ﺑِﺎﻟﺼَّﺒْﺮ

Transliteration

illal ledhiina aaamonu wa 'amiluus saaliaati watawasao bilaq qi watawas sao bus sabr

Meaning:

3. Except those who
believe and do righteous deeds, and recommend one another to the truth, and recommend one another to patience.

Tafsir

Verses 2 and 3

Thus, Allah swears by this, that man is in Khusr, which means in loss and destruction.

﴿ﺇِﻻَّ ﺍﻟَّﺬِﻳﻦَ ﺀَﺍﻣَﻨُﻮﺍْ ﻭَﻋَﻤِﻠُﻮﺍْ ﺍﻟﺼَّـﻠِﺤَـﺖِ﴾

(Except those who believe and do righteous good deeds)

So Allah makes an exception, among the species of man being
in loss, for those who believe in their hearts and work righteous deeds with their limbs.

﴿ﻭَﺗَﻮَﺍﺻَﻮْﺍْ ﺑِﺎﻟْﺤَﻖِّ﴾

(And recommend one another to the truth,)

This is to perform acts of obedience and avoid the forbidden things.

Those who believe and do good deeds and exhort one another to follow the path of the truth and show patience and perseverance.

﴿ﻭَﺗَﻮَﺍﺻَﻮْﺍْ ﺑِﺎﻟﺼَّﺒْﺮِ﴾

(And recommend one another to patience.)

meaning, with the plots, the evils, and the harms of those who harm people due to their commanding them to do good and
forbidding them from evil.
They not only show patience on troubles and calamities, but call others to it.

This is the end of the Tafsir of Surat Al-`Asr, and all praise and thanks are due to Allah.

Fii 'amadinm mumad dadah

Meaning:

9. In pillars stretched forth

Tafsir

In pillars stretched forth. 

"Atiyah Al-`Awfi said, "Pillars of Iron.''

As-Suddi said, "Made of fire.''

Al-`Awfi reported from
Ibn `Abbas, "He will make them enter pillars stretched forth",
meaning there will be columns over them, and they will have chains on their necks, and the gates (of Hell) will be shut
upon them.''

This is the end of the Tafsir of Surat Al-

7. Which leaps up over the
hearts.

Verses 5, 6 & 7

Thus, Allah says,
﴿ﻭَﻣَﺂ ﺃَﺩْﺭَﺍﻙَ ﻣَﺎ ﺍﻟْﺤُﻄَﻤَﺔُ - ﻧَﺎﺭُ ﺍﻟﻠَّﻪِ ﺍﻟْﻤُﻮﻗَﺪَﺓُ ﺍﻟَّﺘِﻰ ﺗَﻄَّﻠِﻊُ ﻋَﻠَﻰ ﺍﻻٌّﻓْﺌِﺪَﺓِ ﴾

(And what will make you know what Al-Hutamah is The fire of Allah, Al-Muqadah, which leaps up over the hearts.)

Thabit Al-Bunani said, "It will burn them all the way to their hearts while they are still alive.'' Then he said, "Indeed the
torment will reach them.'' Then he cried.

Muhammad bin
Ka`b said, "It (the Fire) will devour every part of his body until it reaches his heart and comes to the level of his throat, then it will return to his body.''

ﻛَﻠَّﺎ ۖ ﻟَﻴُﻨْﺒَﺬَﻥَّ ﻓِﻲ ﺍﻟْﺤُﻄَﻤَﺔ

Transliteration

Kallaa layunm badhanna fiil hutomah

Meaning:

4. But no! Verily, he will be thrown into Al-
Hutamah (the crushing fire)

Tafsir

(Verily, he will be thrown into Al-Hutamah.) meaning, the person who gathered wealth and counted it, or does the evils described above will be thrown into Al-Hutamah, which is one of the descriptive names of
the Hellfire.

Ka'b says such a man spends his day in collecting money and his night lying like a rotten corpse. Such a man thinks that the wealth he amasses will make him last forever. But it never will. He will be thrown into the crushing fire. It is a raging fire that burns people but they will not die.

Thabit Banani would weep bitterly whenever he recited and explained these verses.
