Tafsir

Verse 1 & 2

Ikrimah reported that the Jews believed 'Uzair is the son of Allah and worshipped him, while the Christians treated Jesus as the son of Allah and worshipped him.

On the other hand, the polytheists used to worship idols. Against this background was revealed this surah in which Allah directs his Messenger (saw) to pronounce that Allah is Alone, He is Self-Sufficient. He is neither son of anyone, nor He has offspring. And lastly He is comparable to none.

Ibn Abbas explaining the word Samad said: He is Self-Sufficient; He stands in need to none, while everyone needs Him. No one equals Him in greatness, kindness, knowledge and wisdom. These attributes are found only in Allah and no one else. 'Samad' has also been explained as the One Who does not eat; nor does He beget, nor is He begotten.

Abdullah bin Buraidah said that Samad is a Bright Light.

Abul-Qasim Tabarani, explaining the word Samad, in his book As - Sunnah, quotes all these views and says that all these views are appropriate, because all these attributes are found in Allah.

Similar was recorded by At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Jarir and they added in their narration that he said,
﴿ﺍﻟﺼَّﻤَﺪُ﴾
(As-Samad) is One Who does not give birth, nor was He born, because there is nothing that is born except that it will
die, and there is nothing that dies except that it leaves behind inheritance, and indeed Allah does not die and He does not leave behind any inheritance.

Another Hadith that its Recitation necessitates Admission into Paradise

Imam Malik bin Anas recorded from `Ubayd bin Hunayn that he heard Abu Hurayrah saying, "I went out with the Prophet and he heard a man reciting `Say: He is Allah, the
One.' So the Messenger of Allah said,
‏« ﻭَﺟَﺒَﺖ‏»
(It is obligatory.) I asked, `What is obligatory' He replied,
‏«ﺍﻟْﺠَﻨَّﺔ‏»
(Paradise.)'' At-Tirmidhi and An-Nasa'i also recorded it by way of Malik, and At-Tirmidhi said, "Hasan Sahih Gharib. We do not know of it except as a narration of Malik.''

The Hadith in which the Prophet said,
‏« ﺣُﺒُّﻚَ ﺇِﻳَّﺎﻫَﺎ ﺃَﺩْﺧَﻠَﻚَ ﺍﻟْﺠَﻨَّﺔ‏»
(Your love of it will cause you to enter Paradise.) has already been mentioned.
